Italian native Lucio Carusi carves detail into the wings of a granite angel at the Rock of Ages production facility in Graniteville, Vermont. Italian immigrants who had worked in Northern Italy's quarries first came to Barre in the late 1800's during a period of great growth in the regions granite industry. Today many of the decendents of these immigraints stilll work in the many granite related industries in the area. Carusi is wearing a hat made from newspaper; a tradition for Italian stone cutters and sculptors.
Photojournalist Remarks
The Italian influence on Barre's granite industry was extremely important and I wanted to get a photo to reflect this. There are a couple other photos in the story that touch upon this, but I like the look of Carusi riding the wings of an angel in this one along with the paper hat. Italians have worked in all parts of Barre's granite industry but their sculptors are probably what they are best known for.
