Maple sap buckets are unloaded from a trailer on the Green Farm.

Maple sap buckets are unloaded from a trailer before the Greens and friends helping them go into the woods to begin tapping trees on the Green’s maple farm in Poultney, Vermont.
Photojournalist Remarks

The stacks of buckets in the trailer are just fraction of the approximately 1000 that will be hung from taps on the Green's farm (their business is called Green's Sugarhouse). Once they are unloaded, the stacks are carried from tree to tree until the last bucket is gone, then the procedure starts again. At one time the Greens had around 2000 buckets hanging from trees on their farm during the maple sugaring season, but cut back to around 1000 after they started using sap line this year. Pam Green said that even though the line was up long before the buckets, it didn't feel like sugaring season until the family started putting up the buckets.
