Christy Interview - Page 4

PJ: What other kind of tools do you use besides the obvious stuff like cameras and lenses?

BC: I’ve got a Polaroid back that I use to get a good feel for how the picture will look. One nice thing about the Polaroid is that it helps me keep a record. I have a book in my bag where write I down everything that I shoot: I write down what the car is to my nearest recollection, I write down the date, what kind of filters I use, what kind of film , what direction the car is facing, what the light was like at the time. I keep a compass with me so that I know if the car was facing north, south, east or west. I also write down the season because if I don’t like the way the picture looks or if the light is hitting the wrong side of it then I’ll generally know what time of year I can go back and shoot it. I also use the book so that if I see one and don’t have time to shoot it I can write it down so I’ll know where to go back and find it.

PJ: You don’t crop any of your photos for this series after you shoot them, why?

BC: I crop within the camera. I love the full frame. I like them all square because I like the consistency of it, and if I wanted to crop them I’d use a 645 or a 6x7. Generally I’m shooting the front of a car, and they fit into that square format really well. I like it to be as pure as it can. That’s why I don’t like to crop.

PJ: Any favorite car that you’ve shot so far?

BC: Oh, they come and go. The 52 Ford truck I like quite a bit. That’s the one where you just see the head light with grapevines growing around it. I also like the 57 Fairlane with tree growing out of it. I like those quite a bit, and I also like the 59 Mercedes. At first I was just going to do American cars, later I decided to do foreign cars as well. I also like the VW Bug up in the woods. I shot that one in color and it looks good in color as well as black & white. They really do come and go. There are times when I’ll like one over another. Some I like because they’re so simple like those two International trucks. It’s just a real simple photo but it’s just nice that there’s two of them sitting there and they’re identical.

PJ: What kind of things are you going to do with the project in the future?

BC: I want to do a book, and I’d really like to be able to select from a couple hundred different photos to narrow it down to a hundred cars. I’ve looked into calendars as well but I’m waiting for the right deal before I do that.
