Toby Lussier of Lydonville, Vermont struggles with a nervous cow that is next in line to go up for bid during a herd auction at the Williams Farm in Fairfield, Vermont. After more than thirty years in dairy farming the Williams family decided to give it up and sell off the herd.

This photo reflects another aspect of a herd auction. Some of the cows were very nervous due to the break in their routine and the many unfamiliar people around and as a result many of them were hesitant to walk into the auction area.
