Photo of a dairy herd auction

Farmers and cattle buyers look over one of the cows from the Williams' herd being auctioned off at the Williams' farm in Fairfield, Vermont. When the Williams children decided to pursue other occupations the family, after more than thirty years in dairy farming, decided to sell the herd.

Photojournalist Remarks

The cow looking at the buyers and the buyers looking at the cow made this photo interesting. Some of the cows were very nervous while others just marched onto the stage and calmly looked over the bidders. This photo also gives a pretty good idea of what the auctioning process looks like. The lighting for this photo was difficult to deal with. There were several f-stops difference between the light under the tent and the light outside. I was hesitant to use flash because I didn't want to spook the cows and I felt the fence rails would leave unwanted shadows on the bidders.
