Photo of Ted Foster in his office

Dairy farmer Ted Foster looks over data on his farm's herd of dairy cows after finishing up the morning milking cycle on the Foster's family farm in Middlebury, Vermont. Foster spends at least ten hours a week on just the business end of farming.

Photojournalist Remarks

While heading down to the Foster farm from Burlington, Vermont I went over countless possibilities in my mind of the type photos that I would shoot when I got there. This photo was not one of those. After walking around the farm with Foster for awhile we went up to his office and his personality seemed to change once he sat down behind the computer. His love of the business end of farming really came through as he talked about keeping abreast of changes in farming and how doing this has helped their farm prosper.

At first I was using a flash to light things up a bit to illustrate the other environment that he works in but after a few shots I decided that the window light was more appealing. The window light lit just him, in his farming clothes, and part of the computer he was using. I liked this because it isolated him and the tool that he considers very important to his farm's future.
