Photo of the Hintons prepare to move a generator

Burton Hinton, rear, his father Ellie, and fiancee Tammy work on getting a trailer hitched to one of their tractors so that they can move a generator. The generator was needed for power to finish the morning milking and keep the milk storage tank cool after a scheduled power company outage occurred sooner than expected.

Photojournalist Remarks

There were several things that I liked about this photo but it was the background that made me want to get this picture. The light shining through gaps between the boards along with the window at the top of the barn complemented what was taking place in the foreground. I also liked the way that the light slowly faded out from the foreground to the background. The teamwork needed by three family farmers to deal with an unexpected event also illustrates why it is so difficult for farmers to do it on their own if all of their kids leave farming.
