Photo of Burton Hinton milking a cow

Burton Hinton milks one of the 50 cows on his family's farm in Westmore, Vermont, about twenty miles from the Canadian border. At around 6:00 AM Hinton is about a third of the way through the first milking cycle of the day.

Photojournalist Remarks

While talking with Hinton I discovered that he, like myself, is a Boston Red Sox fan. As we continued our conversation about the fortunes of the Sox and baseball in general, his constant kneeling and standing while milking the cows reminded of a baseball catcher in action. This area of the barn was one of few places that I was able get a good unhindered view of him milking a cow. The light was right and I didn't have to stand directly behind a cow and run the risk of getting a manure shower.
