Photo of Burton Hinton on a tractor.

Burton Hinton, on the tractor at the right, gets ready to load liquid cow manure into a tank behind the tractor driven by his father Ellie on their farm in Westmore, Vermont. The manure will be used to fertilize the land that they use to grow feeds for their cows. Activity like this is representative of the work that takes place between the two daily milking cycles that dairy farm life revolves around.

Photojournalist Remarks

Another example of the teamwork that goes into family farming. These tractors are very slow compared to a car and some of the fields they were fertilizing are a couple of miles away. It would take a farmer working on his own at least twice as long to do the same work.
