Photo of Jack Kinerson feeding calves

Jack Kinerson of Ryegate Corner, Vermont feeds a calf on the Knox farm in Wells River, Vermont where he works as a milker. Kinerson, who was brought up on a small dairy farm, said that going into business for himself would have been impractical due to the high cost of loans, cows and the land.

Photojournalist Remarks

Most of Jack's time on the job is spent in the milking parlor but afterwards he goes outside to feed the calves. I was at the Knox farm to get pictures of dry cows (cows not producing milk) being fed in the field but I got there a little bit early so I wondered around and took this picture and also had a good conversation with Jack about some of the problems that small family dairy farmers encounter in this region.
