| Photojournalist Remarks
As with any story, there are always certain photos that are liked more than others. This is one of those that I liked more, and I felt this way about this photo for a number of reasons. Fortier and Whitcomb almost appear as silhouettes, partly because they are both wearing dark clothing, and partly because I exposed for the light falling on the snow, which meant that they were underexposed from this side. The silhouette of them shaking hands really puts an emphasis on the friendships that occur as a result of ice yacht racing, yet no one particular friendship is shown because the faces can't be identified. Because of this it speaks of the friendships of the sport in general, not concentrating on any single friendship. I also like that vast plain of ice covered snow around them. Ice yacht racers prefer bare ice, but a thin layer of snow doesn't prevent them from racing. It just slows them down a little bit. Sebago is the big lake in the southern part of Maine and is a favorite of David Fortier because of the amount of room to race on it.
