Ice yacht sailor Doug Sharp steers his two-man ice yacht

Doug Sharp of Lakeville, Massachusetts works his sail while turning his two-man ice yacht on Watuppa Pond in Fall River Masschusetts just after the conclusion of the Massachusetts DN Class ice yacht racing championships in February of 2005.

Photojournalist Remarks

After seeing at two consecutive events, some of the ice yacht racers said that I needed to experience a ride in an ice yacht. They said if they could find Doug Sharp and his two-man ice yacht, they'd set me up for a ride. After the races concluded I started making the roughly one mile walk back to the launch area. When I got about half way back Doug pulled up and asked if I wanted a ride. I was pretty anxious to except for two reasons. I wanted to get photos of someone steering their ice yacht up close, and because I didn't really want to continue the slow careful walk, done to avoid falling with my equipment on the ice, back to where my vehicle was parked. The ride allowed me to get the photos I was looking for and get a good feel for the sensation and speed of ice yachting.
